2009 Skin Cancer Screening Volunteers

The annual Stanford Dermatology free skin cancer screening was held on Saturday May 16th at the new Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City and was a great success.  According to screening director Dr. Susan Swetter, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of Stanford's Pigmented Lesion & Melanoma Program, 287 individuals were screened, with detection of the following presumptive skin cancers: 10 basal cell carcinomas, 3 squamous cell carcinomas, and 3 pigmented lesions with biopsy recommended to exclude early melanoma or severe dysplasia.  All individuals with presumptive skin cancer were referred for further dermatologic evaluation and biopsy confirmation of diagnosis. In addition, 14 individuals with clinical atypical nevi were identified for ongoing dermatologic surveillance.

Dr. Swetter would like to thank the following volunteer physicians, nurses, medical students, and Stanford Dermatology staff for their assistance during the event:  (Physicians): Joanna Badger, MD, Anne Chang, MD, PhD, Hayes Gladstone, MD, Cari Lee, MD, PhD, Thomas Leung, MD, PhD, Youn Kim, MD, Kristin Nord, MD, Zakia Rahman, MD, Todd Ridky, MD, PhD, Edward Sprague, MD, Jean Tang, MD, PhD, David Wong, MD; (Nursing Staff): Susan Engard, RN, Karen Griggs, RN, Cathy Rizzo, RN, Lisa Taylor, RN, Martha Berrier, RN, Prafulla Patel, MA; (Stanford Medical Students): Gabriel Martinez-Diaz, Kunle Ogunrinade, Eon Rios; (Dermatology clinic staff): Misty Komrowski, Regina Burrell.
