Melanoma Chemoprevention Trial

Dear Colleague:

As Director of Stanford’s Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Program, Dr. Susan Swetter is leading Stanford’s participation in the first National Cancer Institute-sponsored melanoma chemoprevention trial in conjunction with colleagues at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Chemoprevention refers to the use of natural or synthetic agents to prevent disease by identifying it in its earliest stages of development and halting progression to invasive cancer, or by preventing cancerous formation in cells at the outset. Our study is investigating a nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory agent in patients with atypical moles. It is the hope that our findings will inform the development of new chemoprevention regimens, and provide one of the first avenues for prevention of melanoma in high-risk individuals.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Swetter at 650-852-3494 for more information regarding the trial, which will begin patient accrual in January 2009.

We thank you in advance for your commitment to improving melanoma reporting in our area.

Sincerely,

SUSAN M. SWETTER, M.D.
