Epidermolysis Bullosa Clinic Clinical Trials
A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Dose-Response Study of the Safety and Efficacy of Thymosin Beta 4 in the Treatment of Patients with Epidermolysis Bullosa
Patients with Junctional or Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa are being sought for a wound healing research study to test the safety and wound healing properties of Thymosin Beta 4 (Tβ4) in EB wounds. Tβ is a naturally occurring substance present in human cells. It represents a new class of wound healing drug.
This is a Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled study, which means that some patients will receive a gel with medicine (Tβ4) in it and some will receive a gel with no medicine in it (placebo). Neither the patient nor the Study Doctor will know which medicine the patient receives. Patients have a 75% chance of receiving study drug. (For every 3 patients who receive the gel with medicine, 1 patient will receive the gel without medicine.)
The study medication gel (Tβ4 or Placebo) will be placed once a day on a single lesion (a sore selected by the doctor for treatment). Study medication will be used each day until the lesion heals or for up to 8 weeks, whichever comes first. Study patients are required to see the Study Doctor every other week for up to a total of 6 visits.
The EB wound will be examined and photographed at each visit. Blood will be drawn at study start, at 2 weeks, at 4 weeks, at 8 weeks and at the follow-up visit. If the lesion heals before 8 weeks, blood work will be done fewer times and fewer study visits will be required.
Patients receive either $50 per visit or reimbursement for travel expenses, whichever is greater.
